Whale: A Stool Inspired by the Sea

Farzaneh Biazaran's Award-Winning Design Connects Everyday Life with Nature

Farzaneh Biazaran's inspiration for the Whale stool came from the sea, a place full of unseen wonders. Biazaran believes that humans often search for the unattainable in galaxies and beyond, while there are many surprising wonders right here on Earth. The connection between design and nature, according to Biazaran, is infinite and full of small details that can each create a whole new design. The sea, with its beautiful curves and arcs, particularly those created by whales, served as the primary inspiration for this project.

The Whale stool stands out for its simplicity and modernity. Biazaran's goal was to create a connection between everyday life and the faraway nature, resulting in a stool inspired by a whale's tail. The stool, designed to alleviate the tiredness caused by prolonged sitting, is made of two plastic pieces with a heavy bottom for balance. The lower parts are made from heavy materials, while the upper parts are made with light and durable materials, making it a comfortable and functional piece of furniture.

The Whale stool is made of two plastic pieces (fiberglass) with an extra bottom lead piece made of heavy fiberglass for balance. The stool measures 300mm in width, 500mm in depth, and 400mm in height. The color scheme is a sleek black (RGB code 000000) with a high gloss urethane finish, adding a touch of elegance to its design.

Farzaneh Biazaran worked with Farshid Naderi and Arta Paya on this project. The design process began in Tehran in September 2016 and was completed in January 2017. The Whale stool is a testament to Biazaran's belief in the infinite connection between design and nature, and its success is a validation of this belief.

The Whale stool was awarded the Silver A' Furniture Design Award in 2017.
